Food Flows and the Roles of Cities in West African Food Distribution Networks

In West Africa, rampant urbanization is changing food systems, including the magnitude and composition of flows length supply chains. An increasing body literature discusses pathways to sustainable transformation urban systems taking into account links between rural spaces. Research policy have focused on role cities as consumption centers receiving from local, regional, global hinterlands. This study aims at widening perspective in distribution, by bringing focus a city's function consumption, aggregation, disaggregation center. The analysis based comprehensive set primary data collected four African across different seasons. shows that investigated are integrated multi-scale market networks. Their position within these networks interacts with their reliance other territories for functions, such aggregation goods. capital Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) Bamako (Mali) relied more lower-rank settlements further away, while Tamale, secondary city Ghana, acted an assembly local producers turn supplied larger centers.
